Starting and growing a business these days seem to be so easy, thanks to the Internet and social media. That is, until you really actually get to start an online business. With so many budding entrepreneurs setting up a business on the Internet, the biggest challenge is how to get clients to take notice of you.
We both know that creating a strong presence for you and your business can be very stressful and time-consuming. It’s like being caught in between a rock and a hard place: we know building credibility for your business online is vital to bring in more clients, but at the same time, there are many other aspects about starting and building an online business that are just as important and need our attention.
That’s where I come in. I help aspiring entrepreneurs start and build an online business by creating strategies and offering my skills and experience as both a writer and social media marketing consultant so that you can stand out from your competitors, and focus on other aspects of your online business.
How I Got Here
I was very fortunate to have been exposed on the benefits of becoming a business owner at a very early age. My dad was an entrepreneur, and had set up several distribution businesses up to the time that he retired. He was also my inspiration. I wanted to follow his footsteps and be able also own my own business and be the boss.
That time though, being a boss for me meant to take over my dad’s businesses when the time came for him to retire. But after I graduated from college, he challenged me not to settle to merely being known as the boss simply because I inherited it, but because I earned it.
So instead of working in one of the companies that my dad owned, I went out to find out what kind of business I wanted to start and build for myself. My first job was working as a call center agent for a company based in the US. This was when I first got exposed to the huge difference between being an employee to being the employer.
Don’t get me wrong. I enjoyed my job and the pay that came with it. But I also felt “trapped” while I was working there. There were times when decisions that I made were pushed aside because of the simple reason that it was not the way how things were done in the company. I also knew that I could only go so high up the corporate ladder before I reach the ceiling and could no longer go further.
My wakeup call came when I was forced to report to work on New Year’s Eve. Going to work was a challenge in itself. I had to carefully maneuver my car through the streets where people were setting off firecrackers just to make my way to the office. When I got there, there wasn’t really that much work to be done. In fact, we were all allowed to go back home right after midnight struck.
While driving myself home, I remembered my dad and how not once was he not with us during New Year’s Eve (or any holiday for that matter). On top of that, I wasn’t even making half as what my dad did. The passion and desire to start a business of my own rekindled. I just had two problems: I didn’t have any savings to start a business of my own. I also didn’t know where to start.
Like everyone else, I began to look online for ideas. Then, it suddenly hit me! The Internet was THE PLACE where I can start and build a successful and thriving business even if I had only a limited budget.
Worth the Risk
One important lesson my dad taught me when it came to starting and building a business was that it requires a huge amount of commitment at the beginning. I knew I needed to focus on it. That was when I decided to resign from the corporate world, and began to build MY own business.
My journey to build my freelance writing business was a roller coaster ride (for lack of a better term). It was scary, exciting, frustrating, enjoyable, and stressful all at the same time, mainly because I had to learn the ins and outs of starting an online business on my own.
But it was also very rewarding. Aside from growing a successful online business by focusing on building my personal brand, I was also able learn and develop important business skills that helped me to start and build a distribution business. This second business allowed me to fulfill one of my childhood dreams—to follow in the footsteps of my dad. This introduced me to Facebook as a vital tool to help you promote your personal brand and grow a business online, and today, it is now my third love (my dad and my boyfriend, Neo, are first and second, respectively).
